Trading Spouses/Dysfunctions

I swear to you that I do not watch the show Trading Spouses on any kind of regular basis, but I happened upon it last night at a quarter to ten and it was either that or Veronica Mars, which I actually do like a lot. However, the short bit I saw of the show was so horrific that I was hooked in immediately. Reality shows are the car crashes of pop culture. This really, really, super fat woman with a gigantic gap in her teeth was crying to another woman about how she was worried about her family and all. Turns out the big woman, Marguerite, a devout Christian/Psychotic had switched with a family who believed in astrology and the summer solstice and liked stars and didn't read the Bible. In other words, they were the spawns of hell sent to destroy Marguerite and her family (except she never said "family;" it always came out as "fambly"). On the drive back to her home, M. was crying and sobbing, working herself up, saying things like, "I never knew I'd see what I saw there. NEVER! I never wanted to see what I saw there! Sweet Jesus!" I missed the whole first 45 minutes so it's possilbe the astrologists did do horrible things like light the other neighbor chirren on fire or defectate in a cemetery or offer up sacrifices to Satan in their back yard, but my guess is that maybe she saw a pack of Tarot cards under the phone book or noted a larger than ordinary collection of wind chimes. When she got back home, she flew into a rage and ripped up the letter the other woman had sent to the family where she designated $50, 000 however she saw fit. Maguerite was screeching and saying she was a warrior of God and all the cameramen who don't believe in Jesus should get thee out of the house. It suddenly occurs to me that maybe all of this was staged. I'd like to believe it because she appeared to be even crazier than Carrie's mom in the book of the same name (you know, the mom who calls breasts "dirty pillows" and ends up being crucifixed by silverware?). At the very end, they listed how the money had been given out and the last amount was $20,000 for M.'s gastric bypass surgery. Then the last line, "Marguerite has decided to accept the money." I'm not a huge fan of Fox network, but I love it that they portrayed the New Age-y peopls as rational and generous, and the Get Thee Behind Me as the irrational, ignorant, and hypocritical person of God.

I didn't see that episode of Trading Spouses -- in fact, I've only seen it once before -- but they were heavily advertising that episode. That woman looked like she had emerged from swamps of hell. I think I had nightmares about her. Seriously.

You have to maintain a much more focused attention when reading a good short story versus a novel, because if you skim, you might miss something.  For this reason, I find it a little more difficult on my brain to read short stories.  But if you're going to write in the form, you should read in the form (and others--I have yet to memorize a poem as was suggested in my workshop last week), so I've been trying. Lauren Groff has a story called "At the Round Earth's Imagined Corners" in Best American Short Stories, 2014. You might have read her novel The Monsters of Templeton, or her other short story from a previous Best of collection, "Delicate Edible Birds" (also the name of her book of short stories), I have a vague recollection that that story was about World War II or possibly World War I and a dinner party where the people invited are living it up . Candyman: Race, Class, Sexuality, Gender, and Disability

Candyman hits on almost all of the sections we discussed over the last six weeks. Let's start from the most obvious and move from there.   Race: A large part of Candyman confronts the anger and rage of the Black community after years and years and years and years of systemic racism. Candyman is an embodiment of all of the men who have suffered at the hands of whites (white police man, the white community, white systems that have set them up to fail such as the housing projects of Cabrini-Green). The monster of Candyman is a tornado of retribution, a hive of bees swirling angrily and containing the men who have been lynched or tortured by whites, starting with the original death of a Black male painter who dared to fall in love with a white woman whose portrait he painted. This monster, like the original, can be summoned by anyone who dares to say his name out loud in front of a mirror five times. It’s all about the recaps. It’s a show made of recaps from previous shows. I purposefully skipped the first 40 minutes. These guys are all a bunch of idiots. They are turning on one another. Wes has not shown up, because he will probably come in at the very end for some kind of surprise. They are all trying to humiliate Jake because he is too perfect and too sweet (however, he just referred to himself in the third person; kind of irritating). I don’t remember any of these guys, to be honest. Who are these women in the audience? Oh, okay time for a short break because the show has been on now for three minutes. You know what, I’m going to go ahead and time the difference between the commercials and the actual airtime of the show. >Show returns at: 8:47 p.m. Don’t forget the 20 minutes of clapping in between the scenes.
